Jeffry Loy
Light of 1000 Souls
Stainless Steel Sculpture

Native Americans commonly believe that when a person dies, his or her spirit takes the shape of a light while the body returns to become part of the earth. That light must then journey to a high point, which might be a mountain, a hill, or a tree, as in this sculpture, which would serve as a steppingstone to the start of the sky trail. Commonly known to the Western world as the Milky Way, many American Indian nations refer to these stars as the sky road, a path traveled by the souls of the dead, an trail where each star makes the footstep or the spirit of one who has left this life.
(Inspired by "The Road of Stars" by Joseph Bruchac in Parabola, Summer 2002.)

The 144 solar-powered LEDs contained within the 12 spheres automatically turn on at dusk each night to illuminate the night's sky with three distinct patterns every 30 minutes.

The artist would like to thank Joe Martin, San Francisco and South States Metals Corp., Lithia Springs, GA.

Jeff Mather
Horizonish
Architectural Sculpture

Horizonish is an architectural folly for the intersection of North Highland and Freedom Parkway. It is meant to be viewed using peripheral vision, while traveling at 40 mph from a distance of 100 feet or greater. Chaotic enameled painting on timbers was collaboratively painted by different people in different places at different times. The work was developed by a group of teenage girls from the S.T.A.R.S. program of the homeless shelter run by Atlanta Urban Ministries out of Grace Lutheran on Ponce de Leon. Additional painting and structure fabrication was done by students from Grady Arts Academy at Grady High School.

Corrina Mensoff
Maypole
Installation

This Spring tradition, incorporating a pole with ribbons woven in a dance, was a beautiful and fun collaboration with The Waldorf School of Atlanta on opening day (May 1, 2005) of the exhibition.
